Thomas R. Young, known professionally as Dydmos, is a Canadian musician and songwriter. Based out of Alberta, Canada, the artist also owns his own record company, IXXI Records. Check out our interview with him below.

Interview —

What is your name?

“Thomas R. Young”

Would you rather have $50k in cash or a perfect credit score, and why?

“Perfect credit, build assets and starting gaining RoR on banked moneys. Definitely not anywhere near that point yet, but it’s a good mindset.”

Who is your favorite producer?

“Difficult to answer, I love practically every subgenre of hip-hop that has emerged in some form or fashion. From the Statik Selektah’s to the Metro Boomin’s. If i had to choose one right now? Probably Kato because of the work he does to inspire a lot of smaller creators with new business tactics and mindset shifts. Great stuff. Along with his absolutely rockin’ catalogue of beats and songs with great artists.”

Are you a touring artist or a recording artist?

“A little bit of both, some of my songs are more produced and engineered to be vibed with, rather than played at a concert. But I still haven’t gotten to do the water bottle thing at a summer festival, so definitely a touring artist AT LEAST till then. And probably till the day I die following that let’s be real.”

Have you ever thought about quitting music?

“I used to think it would be fruitless. And I had one night where I did seriously contemplate if it was worth it to continue. But a local rapper named Nick Rhymes reached out to me and shook me out of that headspace. He asked why I do rap. Its because I love the way it makes us feel. To cultivate skill in rap is to grow as an individual. Test new waters, put yourself out there and destroy the old you over time. Rap is vulgar, beautiful, abrasive, touching, and everything else under the sun. I do rap because I love rap. That’s why I will never quit.”

Favorite Era of music?

“Classical or, right now! Everything is on the table. No disrespect to the older eras meant. The whole is the sum of it’s parts after all.”

Do you plan on traveling?

“Where’s the wheels or wings? Get me onboard asap.”

Are you an independent artist or are you signed or under any management?

“I’m independent primarily but I work with Jake Strain, who, to edify a little, is an awesome manager and mentor for the business side of things.”

What was your most memorable concert, did you perform at it?

“My most memorable concert was October 5th, 2015 at The Vogue in Vancouver. I saw Pouya and The Buffet Boys completely by surprise as I was going for The underachievers. I didn’t know who the other guys were at the time. The Vogue was half empty sadly. They were all incredibly talented acts. That night also stunk as I was figuring out the transit in that area and I showed up a little late, missed my meet & greet opportunity with UA. Despite all the hiccups, the actual performance was amazing. It would be crazy to one day perform with any of those artists as I love all their music now.”

What was your biggest challenge that you had to overcome during your music career, so far?

“My own sense of pride or control of creativity. I used to have the mindset that there are only “so many ways” to rap, that I had to find and dominate new schemes all the time. That lead me to noticing parallel thinking and getting frustrated whenever I found artists with a similar sound I was developing. So I would try to change too much. That stunted progress. Don’t do that.”
